I have an almost 8yr old with ASD/ADHD combined type who started meds, Focalin XR, this March although he is not on meds over the summer per his psychiatrist. He does not have academic issues but we started meds bc of his behavior, oppositional and uncooperative, and that he could not sit still (he was running laps between math problems). His neuropsychologist recommended meds after a full evaluation.

It got MUCH better on medication at school: much more participation, engagement, no more behavior problems, even his social skills improved dramatically. We never had issues at home. Overall, the medication made his school life a whole lot better and happier.

Another parent of a 6 year old on ADHD meds. It has changed her life (and ours).

We actually started medication right after DD was diagnosed at 6, but went through many different meds and dosages and psychiatrists until the medicine started to work consistently around age 8. I don't think 10 is old at all for ADHD meds.

10 yo ds has been diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive and his psychiatrist is recommending medication. I am NOT opposed to medication but was wondering about its effect on younger children. The recommendation is for Adderall. Thank you but I am looking for information/facts and NOT opinions and uninformed judgments.
