We're at a fed govt. daycare center, and they routinely close several hours early the day before a holiday. We don't find out until a day or two before when the announcement goes out through the govt. agency. I'm not a fed, so the first one or two caught me off-guard, and it is a hardship having to take leave for those few hours before nearly every holiday, but that's just the way it is. No discount for those hours.

I would be annoyed by this and yes you should ask to have a credit to your account. Is this a large daycare? I'm assuming it is not a Federal. I can see the President calling for half a day on the 3rd, but not the 2nd. You pay for them to take care of your child, fight them on this.

OP, when did the daycare mention this? I would hope it would be a month out, and not this week.

Being annoyed and calling it a hardship are two different things.

Most people have July 3rd off, not sure why the daycare would do a half day on the 2nd. That's stupid.

I would be really irritated by that, and I think the notice is also quite late to be making the decision.

OP here. In my case, it actually is a hardship. I have zero vacation hours after using them all for maternity leave, kid's doctors appointments, etc. So I have to take unpaid leave. Maybe losing 250 bucks from a paycheck is no big deal to you - but I feel the impact.

I disagree. Its not in their list of holidays so one would expect it to be open regular operating hours.

It's their business...they decide what is "appropriate," and you're free to find another daycare.

We received a notice that our daycare center will be closing at noon on July 2. This isn't in their declared holidays in their guide, and it's obviously not for professional development or facility maintenance.

The center director used to run an in-home daycare end was able to do these sorts of things on a regular basis. But this is an actual center with staff, etc.

Am I totally unreasonable to be really annoyed by this? My work certainly won't be closing early to give me a free half day. I'll have to use precious vacation hours to get my kid early.

Should I push back and ask about whether there will be a 10% reduction in that week's rate to reflect the reduced hours? Or let it go to avoid being the a-hole parent?
