Another idea, if it is all-over upholstery (like a parson's chair) is just to slipcover it. That would look good on a parson's chair, and would be so much easier to care for -- just take them off and put them in the wash. I'd get like a white, so you can bleach them when someone spills spaghetti sauce.

Big difference is whether they are upholstered all over, or just segments on the seat and back. As PP said, if it's not all over upholstery, it's really easy to remove and recover yourself. Wait for a 40% off coupon for Joanne's and go for it.
If it's all over upholstery, you're looking at somewhere in the $400 to $800 range for labor, depending on the cut of the chair, plus fabric. You can take a picture with your phone and email it to an upholstery shop and they will give you an estimate -- that's what I did.

We have had two wing chairs done over the last 5-6 years and one cost $550 and the other was @$650. Dining chairs I'd think would be quite a bit cheaper (much less fabric/work), though it certainly depends on the quality of the fabric you're using too. Washingtonian Magazine had an issue on home improvement or something like that which covered furniture repair experts. You can probably find it on Washingtonian.com

I don't know what it would cost but if I can reupholster my own, anyone can do it.

Dining room chairs should be simple. Do they unscrew at the bottom? It took me about 2 hours to cut and staple new fabric on and then rescrew the chair seat to the bottom.

I could take my parents old dining table and chairs from storage. Seat and backs are worn and in a dated fabric. There would be 8 chairs.
