We knew of the camp being held at IT and signed up because it's closer to us. It sucks for the U street families who envisioned walking to camp in the morning who now have to figure out transportation. I don't think the Y people understand that distance is prohibitive for some people, especially those who rely on public transport. Their website registration still doesn't show which camps are where. It's a shame because it could be so great and it's turning off a lot of families.

The Y wasn't terribly unorganized just a few kinks they had the first week. Also a lot of camps weren't as advertised. We were at IT and the Y told us half the sessions were going to be at IT this summer. They told us back in Dec/Jan so they def knew the locations would be split.

OP here. We actually only did a week of Y camp last year and other than them losing DD's water bottle by the end of the week, we didn't find it that disorganized. It was also incredibly convenient. I understand that it's always hard to find location partners, but they initially advertised everything as happening at W Street and the locations of all the camps were only finalized when it was too late to pick anything else. Even if this summer goes perfectly, we will not be returning next year because the whole experience left such a terrible taste in my mouth.

You could, but I don't think it would be any faster than taking the G8 from Shaw, if you're coming in on the green/yellow from Columbia Heights. Gallery Place is really a hassle in the morning with kids. And the walk up Lincoln Road is much more quiet and pleasant than the walk along Rhode Island.

If you take the G8 you should wait until it turns onto 4th street to get off. Lincoln is a big hill & getting off on 4th/Edgewood gets you a lot closer to school.

I was looking at the Y camp. I live in NE and have friends at Inspired so I knew some of the camps would be there. I called to find out which ones and I was told it wasn't clear yet. The Anthony Bowen location was a non-starter for me as I live and work on the Red Line.

So I signed my kids up for aother camps. Totally agree it was not well handled.

In your case I would try to get a transfer to Anthony Bowen but it will be a different session. Apparently they were going to try to have the ones that were more outdoor oriented at Inspired because of the Edgewood fields.

there is a bridge now so you don't need to walk along ri, but switching trains would be hard

We got moved to all Camps at the Bowen location. I was really angry when they told me that the camps we had signed up for were not at the Y. It seemed incredibly disorganized, but by the time we found out we had no other options. Good luck, OP.

I would probably actually take the Green line out north to Fort Totten. WMATA says that's faster by about 5 minutes anyway.

And to PP, she's 5 and used to walking about 3/4 of a mile to school in all kinds of weather anyway, so I don't think that will be an issue.

I've walked on the new bridge from RI, and it wasn't too bad. How old is your child and does s/he complain about walking?

Honestly, there aren't a lot of buses that get close to the actual school building. You can metro to Shaw and then take the G8 and walk a few blocks. Or you can take the H2 and walk a few blocks.

Hi everyone. My child is enrolled at YMCA summer camp which is apparently being held at ITS/Lee rather than at the Y as we had previously been led to believe.

I wanted to see if there were any families who make the commute from Columbia Heights/MtP using public transit to ITS or Lee. We will drive some days, but can't drive all of them, and aren't really sure what the best way to get to and from camp is. Thanks in advance!
