The quality of furniture you can find on there for low prices--especially old stuff in the antiques section-- is amazing. You'll pay much more for new crap from Ballards etc. But you need patience and a good eye.

Totally agree!

You can get quality furniture for a fraction of the price you would pay for the same thing if it were new. Requires patience but you can get just about any furniture you want and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg.

Haverty's when things on major sale (like the upcoming July 4th sale). We bought the Turner bedroom set (it's branded by Haverty's) and couldn't be happier. Looks a lot more expensive than it was. Stay away from Marlo, Bob's Discount Furniture and the like. You'll be annoyed at how quickly the furniture will get beat up.

We bought a sectional at Belfort, agree they have good prices on a lot of stuff. You definitely have to be ready to weed through stuff- sometimes the options are paralyzing!

Re Ballard- I like a lot of their stuff, but we bought a dining room table from there and I don't think the quality is great. Honestly for dining room furniture, I think the DC area craigslist often has great options, particularly if you're looking for pottery barn style stuff at a good price.

Try West Elm too.

Ballard Design has good sales and you can buy online. Also, there are plenty of nice furniture options on Amazon. Check the reviews and look at customer provided images. That is even easier than dragging your kids all around town.

Haverty's is decent, but I find their furniture to be rather large and bulky, and my taste leans more modern/low profile.

I second Belfort if you are looking for a one-stop shop. And I live in MoCo. Found the trip well worth it (and had a baby in tow).

Try World Market for dining tables/chairs.

We are moving into a new house this summer and need to buy several new pieces of furniture, including sofas for the family room, a bedroom set, and a dining room set. My taste runs towards the more classic Pottery Barn lines, but we've never bought several rooms of furniture at once before. Now that there are kids in tow, I want to make this as easy as possible. What are some good local stores (Montgomery County would be best) that have nice quality, simple furniture for reasonable prices?
