Since you have a 3.5 year old and you really want to put something so you can put all the 'stuff' in, I'd look at wagons. We've rented good beach wagons in the past. No kid I know ever turns down a wagon ride. You may ned to carry something by hand if DS won't be in the wagon for both the walk to and from the beach.

Cover the wagon with a towel or something to keep it shaded, so you won't have any burns for the "ride back" to your house/hotel.

I agree with PP about a stroller with pneumatic tires. Anything else won't work. We took the bigass jogging stroller, and even that was a slog in soft sand, though good on the damp pack below the high tide line.
Otherwise, renting is a good idea. Don't mess up yours from home.

I'm the PP you quoted, unless you're planning a second, I'd probably try it then. It's not quite such a big deal if you damage it since he's probably close to outgrowing it anyway.

We lived close to the beach. What you do is pull the stroller backwards with the front wheels tipped up. Your arms go behind you to the handle. You walk forward in the direction you want to go, child is looking the opposite direction. Pull through the sand. It works in deep sand. Once in smooth packed sand you can stroll as normal. Make sure you hose it off with fresh water afterwards so the salt water doesn't damange it.

Find a local company and rent one. They expect it to be used on sand and then you don't damage your home/regular stroller.

We've left the stroller on the sand by the boardwalk. It depends on the beach if the stroller will be there when you get back.

Even when we were on Hilton Head which has hard packed sand, we used a backpack carrier with dd when she was 8 mos old. There's no way a stroller would work.

It is about 20 feet from the boardwalk to where we typically sit, maybe I'll just plan on carrying it. If the first day is a disaster I'll take it from there. Thanks!

I don't think it will work well. You will need to pull rather than push and it will be hard work.

Personally, I wouldn't consider anything w/o pneumatic tires but that's just me. It's going to depend a lot on whether the sand is hard packed or loose. If loose, you'll need a mountain bike style stroller like a BOB or similar, but if it's packed hard everywhere you're going, then your citimini might cut it. The real question is do you really want to track sand back to your hotel or where ever and then potentially home too? You're going to be dealing with sand until Christmas. At least that's what the pessimist in me would be worrying about.

We'd like to walk instead of drive/trolley to the beach. Will a city mini be decent on the sand?
