I give Billy Crystal a lot of credit for taking on that role especially at that time.

Off the top of my head the next openly gay TV character I can think of was that guy on Melrose Place.

I remember watching this as a teen in the 90s on one of those throwback channels. My dad would watch with me sometimes. I thought it was hilarious and I was shocked at some of the story lines. I'm glad to hear it's still on. I'll have to check it out.
