DH is the middle of 3 boys. ILs suck - so not fun to be with. I'm second of two. My family is so much more fun. I don't think this is a numbers game - I think it's just a people/culture issue

DH is the oldest child of 4. He was his mother's darling and totally spoiled until his sister came along 4 years later. She was cuter, precocious and reached milestones earlier than DH. He then dropped from Princeling to Problem Child. Two more brothers came along and DH was shoved to the side.

DH has never been close to his siblings and still harbors deep seated resentment toward them.

MIL and SIL are annoying blabbermouths. FIL is a total Beta that is led by the nose by MIL. I spend as little time with them as possible, and never tell them anything of consequence.

I suppose I would be inclined to make more of an effort if they had been kinder to DH.

Dh has one sister. I get along with my MIL better than I get along with either of my parents. We're very different but we both make efforts to make each other comfortable and meet near the middle.

Dh has one sister. I have one sister. We both find my family easier to deal with in most situations. He has a better rship with my fam than I do with his.

No relationship with MIL as she passed away two years ago from Alzheimer's (18 years after late diagnosis), FIL predeceased her by 8 years. We don't see his brother except at rare family occasions. We visit and have been visited by his younger older sister. We visit his older older sister. We are Facebook friends with everyone who has a Facebook account.

I have a brother, he has a sister. Im very close with his mom and sister. He was close with my mom also (she died). We have two boys and are done - families of four are the norm for us.

DH is an only. I get along well with his mother. She's a little clingy and dramatic (I wish DH had siblings to share the overbearing parts of her personality with) but she's kind and a wonderful grandmother.

I'm the youngest of 3 and pretty close to my parents. DH gets along fine with them, there's no drama or anything, but they aren't particularly close.

DH has a brother; DH is the favorite child, which kind of sucks, but their whole family dynamic is dysfunctional.

My relationship with MIL is distant but polite - we're not close, but there's no drama.

My DH and I are both only children. I get along fine w/ his parents. He tolerates my mom but never causes any drama. It's always my mom that causes it but it usually between her and I, not my DH.

He's not close to his parents and I'm cordial to the MIL/FIL.

I don't think you can blame that on an only vs. many siblings. You like to be around a lot of people.
