This speaks much more to the number of kids who were able to get into charter middle schools or Stuart-Hobson via the lottery (probably much fewer than last year), and current parents' comfort level with the feeder middle school, than it does to the quality of the ES. I don't think the number of students who stay for 5th has anything at all to do with the quality of the ES. People are not leaving their elementary schools at fifth because they don't like their elementary schools-- people who don't like their elementary schools leave much earlier than 5th!

I disagree. There are 5th grade spots at BASIS for anyone who wants one.

Are you new to the school? Inbounds j guess? Teachers are excellent but fair warning that class sizes are currently huge. This will improve in about two years with renovation but just so you are not surprised that's the situation now. Next year the 1st grade classes are going to be 28-30.

Maury had a 5th grade class of 25 this year (down from 45 the year before). Next year, there will be two full 5th grades--- at least 40 students staying for 5th grade.

At this time, you're in very good hands with any Maury teacher, seriously. The first grade team, whose teachers work closely together (as do all grade-level teams), have a huge amount of experience and pedagogical training grounded in countless summer and other training events. Between them, my kids have had all of the teachers in that team and they really set them on a path to be successful and well-rounded students. So enjoy!

It is not appropriate to post about specific teachers, whether good or bad. It's a slippery slope.

OP--your best bet is to write the principal and share the traits that you would hope to see in your child's teacher. For example if you know your child struggles with organization, share that you'd prefer a teacher whose strength is getting kids organzied. Or if your child is shy and works best with someone who has a softer, nurturing touch, then share that.

My son is going to first grade, and I would like to hear about the teachers.
