OP-It doesn't seem odd to me because nearly every charter functions as its own LEA, or school district. They do have to conform to some policies set by OSSE however.

You should contact OSSE to see if there is a DC-wide rule or policy about this (I have no idea and it seems from this thread no one else does either) and then talk to your school. If there is an OSSE policy and your charter school seems out of sync with it, you can go from there.

OP

So I'm gathering that there isn't an official process for this at the charter schools, it's school by school? that seems odd.

If your charter does not take new students in the grade your child attends (Lamb, Yu Ying), you can stay at the discretion of the principal if you pay tuition.

this is NOT what our charter told us at the beginning of last year when we thought we may move to MoCo. they told us that we can keep the seat and pay tuition. this was for PK3.

Which charter?

why does that matter? i don't feel the need to share. i think that anybody interested in this should call the charter board if you are not enrolled in a charter school or call your school if you are enrolled in a charter.

At our HRCS, the other parents will report you if they find out and you will lose your place.

And, yes, I know Duke Ellington is not a charter, but it does open it's doors to non-DC residents.

Why don't you call the school? You don't have to identify yourself. I think the rules say MD residents can pay to go if there are available slots (think Duke Ellington - although hopefully I didn't just open up this thread to that can of worms), but I'm not sure what the situation is if there is a waitlist and you move. Maybe you are ok so long as you are a resident when you register?

This has come up a lot. You'll move out of state and therefore pay takes elsewhere and therefore will have to switch schools. That part is crystal clear.
What I'm not clear about (with charters) is whether you might have an option to stay and just pay out-of-state tuition. You would for DCPS.

We are considering moving from DC to MD possibly by early fall. We're enrolled in a charter school that we love. I can't find information on the DCPS site about the regulations around moving out of state. Do we have to pull our child out of the charter school or can we leave him there for the rest of the year and commute?

Anyone know how to find the DC regs on this? it will make a big difference in our timing for the move.

Thanks!!
