This is what we used (behind the blinds). The room is so dark I had to buy night lights otherwise I couldn't see my DD's face when I was nursing her! We can't open them so you can't look out the window/let sunlight in.

It's incredibly dark in my DD's room. She still wakes up at 5:30am every morning. Some kids are just wired that way!

Try the valance. But it probably won't make your kid sleep longer.

This way you can still keep the cute curtains on the outside of the frame for decoration.

We actually taped blackout curtains to the outside of the window. Not pretty, but it's not actually all that visible to anyone else, and it makes the room really dark. Made a world of difference in terms of our daughter's sleep.

Thermal tinted glass, blind hung inside of the window, room darkening shade on the outside of the window, insulated curtains. Room stays cool and so dark you don't know what time of day it is. I had to put an LED nightlight plug in on so I could see at night without tripping over something.

You can also make a cardboard valance

So do people just not open the curtains? I'm assuming you don't reattach everything for each nap?

We taped black Glad garbage bags to our windows to get all of the corners and truly keep light out. Our blackout shades sit on top of them so you don't see them at all.

Cheap and does the trick.

Tape thick black poster board to the glass part of your windows under your curtains/shades. Its not always pretty but it works. If you don't like the look from the outside you can always layer white poster board on the outside and black on the inside.

We had good luck with blackout shades like the "room darkening" shades here: http://www.levolor.com/products/cellular-shades/options.php

We just installed blackout curtains in DS's room, but tons of light still pours in the top, and he's waking up like clockwork when the sun rises. Any ideas for preventing light coming in the top above the curtains? TIA!
