A 13 year old spending the night in the backyard with no shelter and no way to access the house, isn't safe.

He was in the backyard, not in a dark alley somewhere. How was this not safe? My son (age 6) LOVES sleeping out in the backyard in the summer.

If you your six year old chooses to sleep outside under the shelter of a tent, with a way to contact you (e.g. an unlocked door, or a cell phone, or a doorbell that will wake you up so you can answer it), if he gets scared, needs the bathroom, or sees someone come into the yard, then that's a different situation. To be honest, I'd probably still sleep in the tent with them at 6, but I don't think you're neglectful to do otherwise.

If you sent your six year old, or 13 year old, to sleep outside without their consent, shelter, or a way to come back inside if there's a problem, then yes, in my opinion, that's neglect.

While I think the mom was fine in her actions, there is no way you can equate your 6 year old loving to sleep outside in presumably a tent and/or sleeping bag when is was preplanned with his consent, to this kid being locked out. Clearly he didn't want to spend an evening outside!

My dad never gave us a curfew and said if we were out past the legal curfew (I think it was 11 on week nights and 1:30 on weekends for under 18), we were not to call him for help. My brother got picked up for it once, wouldn't tell the cops where he lived, and sat at the police station until morning when he finally called my dad.

At 16 my mom locked me out at 10am until I got myself a job. It worked. I came home with a summer job.

I'd think that letting th kid back in come morning after a night on the patio would have been a better idea.

something the police does not need to be involved in. Bet the kid won't do again. Stop the coddling. Break a rule, pay the price.

Yes it's bad. I wouldn't do that to a dog, much less a 13 year old boy.

I have a coworker that did a variation of this. Heard kid leave at 11 pm or so, locked door, kid came home at 3 am wanting to come in. Kid called mom who said "You know my door is locked from midnight til 6 am. You have to wait until then." Kid never did it again.

I'm interested in know if what she did was that bad (and criminal!)
