Speak up, OP. It's usually awkward for the giver and the recipient when duplicates are given. My folks and my DH's mother always asks for gift ideas in advance, and it's greatly appreciated. My DH's dad never asks, and as luck would have it, often purchases a duplicate gift. Of course, we appreciate the thoughtfulness behind any gift, but no child needs or wants three T-Ball sets, three baby strollers, etc
Personally, when I buy gifts for children, I always ask the parents what they would like unless it's a birthday party gift for a classmate of my child. In that case, I include a gift receipt.
