On the flip side, he is also super cool (see, e.g., Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle). NPH has wide appeal.

I agree, OP. NPH does illustrate a drastic change having become so mainstream and popular. What's more: he's perceived as wholesome. He's known as a family guy and a beloved song and dance man. He loves disney and has even done some stuff for them...which is huge given their conservative base.

I just saw a Heineken commercial with Neil Patrick Harris during a MLB game. An openly gay man, advertising a beer (and not a fancy microbrew one) during a major league baseball game. You never would have seen that back in the '80s. In fact, I remember SNL doing a "gay beer" skit .. that may have been the '90s, though.
