There is a big difference between a one time 50 dollars than 430 per week. Thanks! I still think volunteering should be free.

I just looked at the MCPS website as my DC will need SSL hours too, summer is a great time to complete it and our school gave a deadline of June 15 for pre-approval forms to be submitted so if you don't sign up now it's a no go for summer except for pre-approved ones such as the JCC where you have to pay to get SSL hours. I agree this should be investigated based on the website, if kids want to earn the hours this summer and have not been pre-approved, it's like the JCC is positioned to profit from this school requirement.

What is the transportation? If I have to drive my kids to the JCC, I can just as easily drive them to the location of the volunteer work. Also, supervision? The non-profit is getting kids to volunteer to work for free. I don't get why the JCC is the only volunteer organization that charges the volunteers for someone to supervise their volunteering. MCPS talks about leveling the playing field for low and high SES kids. This is the exact opposite. Kids parents are paying to go to a camp where they get SSL hours.

Swim pools are thrilled to have kids volunteer their time for free, soup kitchens are thrilled to have kids volunteer their time for free, why is the JCC an approved SSL location that charges kids to volunteer. Also, I don't believe the kids get hours for all of their time at the JCC. If you are really volunteering to help the community out, then you shouldn't have to pay for the privilege of volunteering. The JCC should set this up so kids can volunteer without charging.

Many programs we've looked into were filled a long time back (Smithsonian, library, zoo) and others require much longer commitment than during the summer. The only coordinated program I have found are week-long volunteer camps at the JCC, which are pricy. Any alternatives anyone can suggest?

Wait, you have to pay to volunteer?!

The JCC camps provide transportation, supervision, and other things to students while they volunteer. So, yes, you have to pay for those things.

MCPS requires students to volunteer 75 hours by the end of high school. It's pretty disgusting that the JCC would profit by charging kids to volunteer. If they were really interested in kids volunteering this would be set up so kids could simply volunteer for free. MCPS should investigate this.

Actually, I think it's pretty disgusting that you expect someone else to arrange volunteer opportunities for your kid and transport them there for free. No one is making you go with the JCC. If anyone doesn't like the cost, they can arrange their own plans.

Thanks for the ideas, all. We're continuing to search.

The JCC charges $430 (non-member rate) for a 5-day volunteer camp. It's 8:30-5:30 each day and the kids do a variety of different volunteer roles. The price was a big surprise - I expected some nominal fee or maybe a donation.

Contact your local pool's swim team reps. They probably would love for his help volunteering setting up for meets, breaking down the set up for meets.

Check volunteermatch.org. Pretty sure you can filter for opportunities that accept teens.
