I agree that its basically out of style. But I havent shopped ocuntertops, so I cant tell you whats in. But I doubt granite is "cheap." But I would look at some magazines and get some other ideas about whats hot and nice if you are going to spend that kind of $$$.
Also, I heard granite has radon and is bad for lungs.
