I was dissuaded from granite countertops when I saw the environmental impacts of quarrying it.

That was only true for a very small percentage of granite that came from certain quarries. It is not true for most granite. These days the fabricators and suppliers are supposed to check to verify it is radon-free. I cannot prove that they really do that. If there's a question, it's not hard to check household radon levels after the counters are installed but the problem was quite rare.

This oft-repeated and over-generalized statement is getting tiresome. There are granites that are virtually indistinguishable from soapstone, for example, or there are some tacky old-school ones that look like they belong in Caesar's Palace. Style and type of granite matter. It comes across as smug and more-fashionable-than-thou to keep claiming that granite is "out" without actually distinguishing different looks that are possible with granite.

We got Quartzite and it took one day to measure and 2 days to fabricate and install. We didn't get any special edging though.

I thought it was the most beautiful option. I am thrilled with my granite counters.

When we had our kitchen remodeled, we had to wait two weeks for the granite to be installed after they came in and measured for it. If you're having the cabinets replaced, the new cabinets must be installed before the come and measure for the counters. Then the 2 week wait will start.

Granite is priced by the square foot. The prices start at around $30/sqft for the most basic style (white with black specks). The prices go up from there. I paid $40/sf for my caledonia granite counters (from Lowes) and that's also a fairly basic style. The best place to start pricing counters is to check out Lowes and Home Depot. You can also visit the showrooms of stone fabricators in your area if you want something really fancy.

We are considering a SFH with vinyl counter tops and we would like to get granite. It is 25 ft in linear length in 4 sections (including the island), so perhaps they are 2.5 ft deep (25x2 = 50 sq.ft).

If you have done something similar, what did it cost and how long did it take?. Any recommendations for local contractors?
