Highly recommend Miele products. Indeed quality is maintained as their home vacuum prices have become more reasonably priced.

I use Shark. It's great on hardwoods and then you can use the brush roller (click of a button) for rugs.

Yup, Miele Delphi - $450 at Bed Bath and Beyond. Plus, it's quiet enough that I can vacuum at night when the kids are sleeping.

+3 on the Miele.

I don't have one yet but plan to buy one soon. They start at $350 or so Amazon.

I too want to get away from bagless and an upright - had a Dyson, now using a $90 Hoover, which is probably as good as the Dyson.

I have a Miele as well, but even if you don't want to go that high end - the two things I recommend that are relatively out of fashion now:

- Bagged. I had several different bagless before I got my Miele, including a Dyson. They are so freaking dirty compared to bagged. With Amazon now, bags are insanely easy to find (versus the old days where it was harder), and they're very easy to replace. I'll never go back to bagless.

- Consider a canister vacuum. I've had uprights my whole life, and it took me a couple months to really get used to the canister vacuum. However, now that I'm used to it - THE BEST THING! It is the most powerful hand vacuum ever (I use it on furniture regularly and it just is awesome, I have a cat that sheds a lot), and it is sooooo easy to use the attachments. While theoretically it should have been easy to use attachments with the upright, it was always just a hassle and I avoided it. I don't avoid it for the canister. A canister is far easier to use on stairs.

My mom has a Simplicity canister that was a lot less expensive and seems really nice.

To me, those two things were eye-opening and game-changers for how useful I found my vacuum... bags and canister.

We need a new vacuum as one we have died after 3 months. We have mostly hardwood floors but some big area rugs where kids spill food. Any good recommendations? Would also be great to use it to clean couch.
