Agreed. Just think of all the hardwoods that were carpeted over and then uncovered and will probably be covered again... Go with what you like to live with. I would rather clean and maintain tile than worry about ruining the wood floors, but you may choose differently!

We're replacing the hardwood floor in our kitchen with tile because the steam from the dishwasher has completely warped the wood. Also it just doesn't stand up very well to spills, stuff being dropped, etc.

Hardwoods were historically the "cheap" finish for most homes in the Northeast. It was a sign of affluence to cover those wood floors with wall-to-wall carpet starting in about the '50s. In the '80s-'90s, wood became fashionable again.

Tile is a tricky one. The big square tiles used in most basements look passé in comparison to the wood-look ceramic, but I'm sure at some point the pendulum will swing back.

OP here, that is a messy job, and in general, the whole house has to be redone (or at least the floor that the kitchen is on).
Anyway, hardwood floors have been around for hundreds of years and they are still popular

You can always get them re-sanded and sealed. They will then look new again.

+1000. If you love hardwoods, go that route. The downside is that hardwoods can be ruined by a leaky fridge or dishwasher and tile will not.

I agree. (And I also prefer wood in the kitchen because it so more comfortable)

I am thinking of going with hardwood in my kitchen because we have and uneven floor and my designer said it would make the kitchen look bigger since it would be the same as the rest of the house.
I am also concerned about something else with ceramic or porcelain or even stone floors. They almost alway look dated in about 10 years. Either it is the shape of the tile, the pattern, the grout that looks off in a decade.
