Subject: Refinishing wood floors, best time of year to do?
Summer isn't a great time because the humidity can make the floor take longer to dry. But we have a walk out basement so maybe this isn't as much of an issue for main level refinish. I like to be gone for at least 7-8 days afterwards. The smell is terrible.

Whatever you do, be sure that the finisher disposes of its staining and finishing rags properly. A house in our neighborhood caught fire due to combustion of linseed oil rags - no ignition source is required as the oxidation of the oil causes heat. It's rare but it happens. Fortunately no one was hurt as the family wasn't home.

We just had the floor redone in our small powder room (had a leaky toilet) and I can't imagine trying to stay in the house if a large area was being refinished. The noise! The smell! Definitely do it at a time when you can air the place out.

Agree, do it when you aren't going to be around for several days. We just had this done on our house before we put it on the market - thank goodness we had already moved out! The fumes were miserable for a good 3-4 days after the process was complete.

We want to refinish our floors but thinking summer would be too hot and not right time since we dont have central ac in our house. Thoughts on this? Do we also need to be out of the house for 3-4 days?
