Just. Have them sent to your phone or tablet. My husband set up my phone to go both to my phone and iPad.

Also, if you want to be a real snoop, just associate her phone number with one of your devices and then you'll receive all her texts on your phone.

(Though I'm solidly in the "stop reading her texts" camp, for whatever its worth).

Does it matter how old the child is?

We monitor our (young) children's texts because they tend to use them inappropriately, can be contacted by adults, may eventually cause an extension of any school drama into the home, etc.

I still remember my mom listening in on my phone calls. It was a ridiculous invasion of privacy.

Phone calls are very, very different than texts. I would give my daughter total privacy for a personal diary and for phone conversations. But anything sent electronically would and should be supervised by an adult.

We actually have a very good relationship and generally I trust her. I'm reluctant to confiscate the device because I do think she needs the outlet to connect with and vent to her friends. And I'm well aware that she can outsmart me technologically at every turn. Just wondering if there is an easy way to do something on the device that prevents deletion of texts.

Do you have an iPad or iPhone? I think you can set it up so that you receive iMessages to more than one device. However do know that there are so many texting apps that kids use now to hide stuff. Very hard to stay one step ahead of them, so address the hiding/lying especially if there is something inappropriate/harmful being hidden

Confiscate device. That's what I would do. It's a violation of our contract for having one.

you could work on having a good relationship with her and trusting her.

Or google "spyware app iphone" and see what comes up.

FWIW, my mom had spyware installed on my computer growing up and I found ways around it when I wanted to, and also hated her and our relationship has never really recovered. We get along fine but we've never been close and she's not someone I call and talk to about my life.

Yes. Take away the iPod Touch until she is ready to abide by the rules.

We have a general rule that we're allowed to see her texts. But now she is deleting them. Is there anything we can do to prevent this?
