I saw it in the backyard of an open house, right after a rain storm. There were pools of water sitting on it along with some mud that had washed up on it. Plus it was no longer laying flat, it was bunched in places and looked...bad.

Maybe if it is installed properly and has some sort of drainage(?) but what I saw looked like a really nasty green outdoor carpet. Not grass.

We are having it installed in the next month in part of our backyard. Too many trees to grow grass and the dogs dig it up, the artificial surface will last a lot longer, not need the maintenance, and give a safe play area for the kids to play for a long time.

We have Had 3 friends and neighbors do it, all have been happy with it.

The cancer scare is NOT from the grass, but the crumb rubber infill (made of recycled tires, which pick up chemicals and oils during their time as tires). Crumb rubber infill is not typically used in residential applications.

This isn't really an option for us. We have a tiny close-in backyard which is 15 feet wide and 38 feet deep. We need 28 feet or something like that for the car. The alley is also very tight so you don't come in straight -- so it's not just a matter of two rows of pavers for the tiles. Also, we don't use the car every day, so I would assume any grass underneath would die -- leaving only about 4 feet of grass on either side of the car. So if we use real grass, it's going to look pretty crappy. If we bricked it, it would have to cover pretty much the whole yard (for same reasons as above). That's why turf is an interesting option.

I have friends in California who did this. They are very happy.

Google drivable grass for products that are heavy duty grids for parjing but are mostly real grass (our other ground cover).

I'm interested in this too. We have a small backyard on our townhouse, and it has a tiny area for eating plus a parking area. We almost never drive but like having an offstreet spot. I'd love to find a solution for the whole backyard where we could still park there but put the car on the street when we have company. Synthetic grass seems far more appealing to me than just bricking over the whole back yard.
