I would require all jobs be broken out into labor and parts. If they said 89 in labor and the parts are 100, the total should be 189.

This job should be 200 tops including labor, $100 for 20 minutes of labor is already ridiculous.

So you should have done it yourself. Next time do!

So no separate labor charge?

I am not defending the $545 bill, but companies have costs that they have to cover, and make a profit. The reality is, customers pay for *everything*.

I find it asinine for people to suggest that because you can find it on Amazon for $97, then that's what you should pay for it, and to suggest that even $97 is a "marked up" price. For the most part, parts costs are not cheaper for professionals than it is for individuals. With any product, you get a discount for buying in quantity. The HVAC company isn't buying 100 of these motors, nor would they. They will buy parts on an as-needed basis, which means they pay the single unit price just like a homeowner would.

As to what is a fair mark up for the motor, and labor for installing it, that I have no idea. On the surface, this does seem excessive.

How can they put $545 for the cost of the part on my invoice? Isn't that fraud.

HVAC companies routinely mark up parts 7 fold at minimum. I have spoken to them about this. Once I was bold and got the part myself from Fergusons and the installer made a big point of saying the part wouldn't be warranted over and over again. It was a copper whole house pressure reducer. Could break, but probably not for a bit.

Don't let them pressure you. Try to get the part yourself and have tell them you'll have it on site.

Isn't the amazon price already marked up?

I would send them the link and ask them directly. Be direct. Send a picture of the invoice. If they do not cut that price down significantly, I would review them all over the internet and contact the better business bureau.

A nice mark up? Installation costs? They are changing more than just one small part?
