NP here. We go to cape cod every summer to visit my ILs, and last year we went out on a whale watch with the kids, ages 7 and 9. It was fun at first but it is a loooooooong ride. Ours was 4 hours. Our kids got super-restless and cranky by the end and truthfully, so did I. The OP's kids are on the young side so I'd highly recommend not going whale watching.

A few other ideas through: Old Silver Beach in Falmouth, ice cream at Polar Cave, and dinner at the flying bridge where you can look out on the water and watch the Falmouth ferry to MV go by.

Funny to see Sesuit get some love here. My family loves it, but I gotta say, my kids were underwhelmed. The natural history museum is a total gem. Whale watching from Hyannis was a big hit. We also have had great times on excursions organized by the Audubon Society in Wellfleet - they do half-day marsh tours, sea turtle egg checks, all kinds of great stuff. Bay side beaches are always much warmer than ocean side; we stay mid-Cape but there must be some just over the bridges where you can let the kids get some water time.

Of course if you've really only got a day and you're going to be in Plymouth, why not do Plymouth Plantation?

Agree with PPs plan, especially Sesuit Harbor. Best lobster rolls on the Cape IMO and beautiful spot. You eat at picnic tables outside next to the harbor (the cafe is basically in a boatyard).

Just a warning that Plymouth is a bit of a hike, and since it's not on the Cape you'll have to watch bridge traffic if you are here after mid June.

When you say soon, how soon? It's still pretty chilly right now - today was warm enough to sit on the beach with a sweatshirt on, but it probably won't be reliable beach weather for another 3 weeks.

If you are in Osterville/Centerville go to the 4 Seas for ice cream.

Plymouth is before the bridge. Are you asking for things to do in that area on the Cape itself? If so, here's a list:

There is a great go-cart/bumper boat/mini golf place right at the Sagamore bridge. It's owned and run by a Harwich police officer, and he keeps it really nice and enforces rules. Great guy!

Farther in, there is the Sandwich Museum and gardens. Great place for kids to run and the museum is full of really cool classic cars.

A long drive, but worth it, is Provincetown. Walk down Commercial street. Kitchy, but fun.

If you take the kids to the beach, at that age, the best and safest beach is Mayflower beach in Dennis, MA. Get there early as parking fills up. Afterwards, stop at Smuggler's Ice Cream on 6A in Dennis Village - you won't regret it. If you're lucky, there will be an outdoor concert at the gazebo across the street.

There are often kids shows at the Dennis Playhouse - magic, puppet, etc.

Be sure to take them to the Brewster Country store on 6A on 6A heading towards Orleans - lots of fun for kids that age. Penny candy, little ice cream place, very quaint.

In Brwester, there is the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and there are tidal flats to walk on, as well as a small aquarium, etc. There is also a Fire and History museum in Brewster in the same area.

On the other side of Dennis (the rte 28 side), you can rent paddle boats and take a leisurely ride down the very tranquil inlets of the Bass River. There's mini-golf nearby as well, and don't forget to take the kids to Sundae School for ice cream on Lower County Road!

We're heading there soon and wondered what we should do while we're there. Have 2 year old and 4 1/2 year old. Will be staying in Plymouth and will have a car.
