Quality duffle bag (not a trunk, there's no room for it in today's dorms), swag to the college they are attending ( I'm not sure why you're opposed, but a gift card to the campus store is perfect).

Most of 00:42 is on target, but make the extension cords surge protectors (some dorms don't allow extension cords but do allownsurge protectors).

The rest of the ideas aren't so great. My college kid and HS senior don't want stuff, they want cash and gift cards.

But, you can download textbooks, etc. Its not just about reading for pleasure but I do agree with you on that.

How about a nice camera?

What about a Go Pro?

beanbag chair

lap desk

canister vacuum

desk fan

desk light

a trunk (works as a footstool, rather than just being shoved in a closet)

You can do a combination of these for under $200 easily.

Will he have a car at college? You can get that battery thing you can put in the trunk of your car to jump the car. And an AAA membership or some car maintenance tools.

For HS grads, I go really practical. I make a gift bag of different things that college kids need and never realize until they don't have it. I have different inspirations for each kid, but my bags in the past have included.

Flashlights -- depending on the kid I have done headlamps from REI, plug in rechargeable flash lights, small hand held flash lights

3M Command hooks all different sizes

Febreeze

Bottles of ibuprofen, excedrine migraine, cough drops, a thermometer, sudafed, bandaids, neosporin, cold packs

Extension cords

Magnets

Painters tape

Ear plugs

Eyeshades

I usually take the gift bag and put it inside a laundry basket

When the graduate is someone close to us and my budget is higher, I include a "nice" item. For a boy it might be a fancy pen or a monogrammed fleece blanket for their dorm room. For a girl it might be a shawl that you can wear out or use as lap throw in the dorm room.
