And your young kids don't have a problem getting their clothes out of an adult size dresser?

No, not at all. It's not that tall.

I think you just need to find one where the drawers glide on casters or wheels and therefore don't require much force to pull them out AND the drawers will not easily pull out all the way (and fall on them).

Our average height almost-4-yo can get clothes out of the bottom 3 drawers of his standard 4 drawer dresser. So we keep pants/shorts in the bottom, shirts one up from that, and socks and underwear in the uppermost drawer he can reach. Not everything fits in there, but it contains his basic 'get dressed for school/play' stuff.

+1. My two year old can open the kitchen drawer and pull out his fork and spoon (and whatever else he can get his mitts on!) and has figured out child safety latches ...adult drawers are not an issue.

+1 .. we have 6 drawer dresser (3 rows of 2, not the tall ones) and DS has been able to get his own clothes since he was 3. its old and in need of refinishing (was DS's grandmother's dresser when she was a kid!), so we are looking to replace with an IKEA most likely. DS is 4, so he can try some out while we're at the store if necessary.

Ikea Malm here also. 6 drawer unit (3x2).

My kids are 3 1/2 and average height and they can reach everything just fine.

We have these basket/box things on a rolling cart in my 5 yo's closet. We have hanging things with sections for PJs and underwear. He can access it all easily. We got this stuff from the Container Store & IKEA.

We have always had an nice tall adult dresser from Bassett (matched the crib). It is bolted to the wall so it cannot tip. My child is almost six and has no issue using it. He cannot reach the higher things well but I put the every day clothing lower.

Both my kids have dressers from IKEA. They aren't specifically made for kids though - they are just regular dressers.

Both of my kids have plastic chests of drawers bought at Target, kept in the closet, where all of their play clothes are kept. They aren't big enough to store off-season stuff, and their few dress-up outfits are on hangers. Also I am forced to be vigilant about discarding clothes they outgrow or don't wear, not buy excessive clothing, and everything has to be folded neatly. But the clothes they actually prefer to wear fit in there just fine, are accessible, and I don't worry about accidents. Also frees up space in the bedroom.

My kids are 7 and 4, boy and girl. They regularly fold their own clothes and put them away. That would be harder with a taller dresser. We will buy them real dressers eventually.

I'm not generally incompetent but I can't figure out how people store clothes for their young kids. My kids are 4 and 6. We need a new dresser or dressers for them. I want them to pull out their own clothes so the drawers they use can't be too tall and the drawers need to be openable easily by a kid their age. Kids dressers seem too big too me with too deep and open drawers and half the drawers unusable.

What do you do?
