Unfortunately, the substitute's ridiculous reaction has taken the focus away from the REAL issue - why on earth were these kids fighting like this in the middle of the classroom? I hope the Gwynn Park Middle administration has addressed this issue as well.

I think that's because it's hard to have sympathy for a group of kids jumping another kid -- while being filmed by another, probably to upload onto Youtube. Obviously the sub should be disciplined, but I'm not feeling to bad for those kids.

And you think there is no way to separate the victim from the perpetrators other than whipping them like animals?

I don't see a sub "disciplining" kids. I see a sub breaking up a physical brawl to protect another kid who was jumped. He did the right thing to break up the fight, but probably in a wrong way. Keep in mind he probably has no training about how to deal with this situation in the right way. And also, unfortunately, it's probably better for the kids to get smacked once than the alternative - calling the cops.

It may be that the kids had to be physically restrained/removed from each other and the classroom. The way the sub dealt with it, however, is unacceptable.
Unfortunately, some of the kids involved in this could have received serious consequences (suspension, placement in an alternate school, etc.) It's doubtful any of this will happen now, because this sub's completely ridiculous behavior has now made all of these kids victims, even is some of them were also acting violently.
So, lose, lose, lose all the way around.

It is not apropriate to use a belt in kids. Period. Hiwever, the kids behavior bothers me just as much if not more. I live near a PGCPS middle school, and the biggest issue is that many of the children have out of control behavior and language and little to no respect for adults. The greater threat to learning is the day in and out disruptive behavior in the classroom. Having seen what I have, I am not surprised that it came to this.

I agree the sub actions may not have been appropriate at all. However, it is unacceptable that students are able to be in school and do whatever they want to do and there is no consequence. I bet if he came back to that classroom tomorrow the students would sit down like they had some sense. Lol.

And this is an example of why people in PG County opt for private school. How can kids learn in this kind of environment? Infuriates me.

The way the sub reacted is unacceptable. However, the children who were involved should still be disciplined by the school in an appropriate manner for fighting in the first place (e.g., suspension) - if multiple kids attacked a kid, then perhaps the attackers should be the ones disciplined. Ridiculous that folks send their kids to school and this kind of sh*t happens.

That is unacceptable but obviously there is a lot more to what was happening. It looked like one of the kids was getting attacked by multiple kids.

This is very embarrassing for the county. Especially when so many are working very hard to improve the school. It looks like the school board has already responded to the incident.

Just watched the video. The sub to me is a violent POS who belongs behind bars.
