OP here.
I returned and got another SunCalc and it works!

It will tell me in 2 hour increments what the sun total is in an area. Has been helpful so far.

This. I've tried one of these devices but found just looking outside a few times during a day is just as good.

A device to measure the amount of sunlight in a given area?

I bought one on Amazon that was a bust. Looking for other recommendations.

You really do not need something like that for planting. Anything over 6 hours of sun = full sun. Those type of devices are use for solar power and other type of applications. What are you doing that you would need those types of calculations?

I was just thinking how I wanted one of these this morning! My issue is there is this side of my yard and I have no clue how much sun it gets because I keep forgetting to check throughout the day. OBVIOUSLY I could get off my lazy butt and check, but I kind of just want something to tell me. But if the one on amazon sucks, I probably won't look into it. Since i am NOT spending $200+.

I thought about buying one when I first started gardening. In the following years, I have had the experience that plants are more flexible than I would have thought, and I don't really need the exact measurement. And if a plant ends up not thriving in a location, I move it.
