Minimal. The school gives them a math packet to complete, essentially one worksheet per week. Other than that, I expect them to read, which they usually do in the a.m. before camp (they are very early risers and we don't allow any electronics in the a.m.) and I also still read to them at bedtime. For my 4th grader that reading is still typically fiction but for my 6th grader, we often read non-fiction books or articles from newspapers or NPR.org about science, entertainment, or other topics that interest him.

A minimal amount of work...the school gives math work books that take about 3 hours. Those usually get tackled in late august. My DD loves reading, though. So, she reads a lot during the summer.

We do math workbooks over the summer and read for at least 30 minutes a day. It takes virtually no time (about the time they would spend on homework during the school year) and my kids stay in the "groove" which makes the transition back to school so much easier.

My daughter works with me on Singapore Math workbooks over the summer, which has been really helping her feel more confident in math.

I have kids play around on khan academy anytime they want. They do summer reading at the local library. If they want to watch a movie, they need to pick one made from a book and read the book first, then we discuss the differences. We have books of experiments that we do periodically. Hmmmm, I'm going to ask the kids what we did last summer, I know I'm forgetting at least one thing.

What do you do with your elementary school-aged kids to ensure they retain most of what they've learned the previous year (and prepare for the next school year)? My DS will be going to summer camp, but there is more emphasis placed on sports, theatre and good old-fashioned fun than academics. While I understand the importance of giving your kid a break in summer, I also want to make sure he retains what he already knows so he's ready for school next year. I am definitely planning to make weekly library trips to keep my 7 year old reading regularly. In the past, we have used Summer Bridge workbooks but, now that my son is getting older, I am wondering if there are better things out there.
