It's a pretty fast car. Wouldn't want my teenager in a sporty car.

We're getting a used x3 for our high schooler. Go for it.

No way. I was a perfect kid on paper. Got straight A's, 1600 SAT score. Cautious as all get out. I crashed a car 3 times before I turned 20. And these were mini vans and honda civics--not exactly sleek, speedy cars.

No one "deserves" a car, let alone a fancy one. Just the fact that she's asking and you're entertaining says to me that she is spoiled...

That being said, if you bought older brother one when he was 17, then you kind of laid the ground work for her to expect one.

Does she at least have a job to pay for the gas and insurance?

I had one. As a 40-something mom. Loved it, but holy cow, were the repairs expensive. And the gas mileage sucked. I'd never get one for a teenager.

If you can afford it comfortably, why not?

No way. And we are pretty indulgent. But hell no.

Absolutely not. Driving a car is a privilege. You get a reliable clunker until you're either 25 or financially stable enough to buy what you want yourself with your own money.

17 yr olds are not great drivers simply because they just don't have the years of experience you need to be one. So there's no way in hell tons of money is being spent on a car that will get in an accident (statistics, why do you think car insurance companies charge more for new drivers).

How old is older brother? Did you buy for him or did he buy? Did he get a car at 17? What car?

But she is spoiled... Don't. It may end up hurting her.

Her brother has a BMW, although older, and she is great student, very responsible, and gets good grades. This is how she is "convincing" us. I am still thinking that it is too nice for someone her age. I don't want other people to think that she's spoiled.
