I know how you feel. I've worn contacts since I was 10 years old. Back in the 70's they thought putting you in contacts would slow down the eye sight loss. Up until a year ago, I wore dailies which were great. I did Lasik back in the 90's and got my eyes from -14 to 20/20, but over the years it slowly starting getting worse again and had to go back to contacts. Now I'm about -3 or -4. Problem for me is one of my eyes no longer focuses. So, I have to wear a prism in one eye. No contacts that can fix prism issues, so it's back to glasses. It's really hard to get used to after wearing contacts for 40 years!!

If you don't have the option to wear contacts, you don't have to have LASIK. Glasses are a good alternative.


NP. For me, wearing contacts isn't about vanity. I see much better with contacts. My eyes are pretty bad -8 in one and -5 in another. Wearing glasses means I have no peripheral vision and I see worse at night. Also given the discrepancy in my scrip I see things smaller with one corrected eye than another when wearing glasses.

I have dry eyes and rosacea. I wear pro clear monthlies. They work for me when many do not.

To those suggesting LASIK, if her eyes are dry, most good docs won't want to do LASIK because LASIK tends to make dry eye worse.

If you don't have the option to wear contacts, you don't have to have LASIK. Glasses are a good alternative.

Have you tried the dailies? About a year ago (I'm 53) tolerate the monthly contacts due to allergies so I switched to dailies and it took a few weeks to get used to them but now I love having thin, fresh contacts on every day.

Unfortunately, it started a little over a year ago, when it was still winter, so I can't blame it on the seasons.

If I want, I can wear the contacts for a couple of hours a day, but above that it's not worth it. The eye-doctors said I'm not harming my eyes by keeping them in longer, but at some point I guess you just go with glasses. I don't think I'm a good Lasik candidate, too myopic. Judging from the feedback, it could have happened sooner, I guess.

I had to stop wearing contacts around 32 yo. Constant discomfort. Got Lasik, no regrets.

Dry eye. Ugh. I try to limit contacts to 3-5 days a week at most, use artificial tears and have wipes to keep the lids moist.

Don't feel bad. I hit my limit at around 27 after wearing contacts since I was around 12 years old.

When did the irritation start? I've been wearing contacts for 30 yrs. I can no longer wear them in the spring. The allergies make it impossible so I just don't bother. But once summer hits, I can put them back in.

I wore contacts for 40 years, but once I hit my mid-50s it's become nearly impossible for me to wear them more than two hours a day without then having sore eyes and twitchy eyelids for days.

Definitely a bummer. Doctors have told me I have the bones and joints of a typical 35-year-old and the blood pressure and heart-rate of a long-distance runner, but apparently I have the eyes of an old-timer. Sigh.
