Check out the Think Fun games. There are many in various price points. These are by far among the best games that my almost 6 year olds love to play.

This. I just got my 5.5 a Ricky ricotta book and he loved it. Just ordered the 5 pack of captain underpants.

I agree. My son just turned 6 and is not ready for Wimpy Kid. Some kids may be, but not all 6 year olds. Mine is still reading (aka listening to his dad and I read) Berenstain Bears. On his own, he's reading Frog and Toad.

He received a paper airplane book for his 6th birthday and that was a HUGE hit! He's been making airplanes ever since.

Target has them, too.

Also, if the child is into Minecraft, any themed item will work.

Depending on your budget, we've found that Star Wars and superhero t-shirts have been big hits as gifts for that age group -- Old Navy, GAP, and JCrew all carry these.

Great suggestions so far. My boys always loved cars, so anything that moved was a great idea - this gives you options from the $1 range (hot wheel) to the $5 range (small cars and trucks that have sounds and move or a bunch of hotwheels or matchbox cars) to car mats ($15 range) and hotwheels sets ($15 to $30 range). Also, you might find a decent remote control car in the $20 range or a die cast car for $10-$25.

Other things: Spot It game, game of Life, Bey Blades, legos, bike horn, water bottle. You can also find some fun art kits at Michaels.

By 6, boys have grown out of Thomas (well most of them, mine had not).

Chapter books, hotwheels/match box sets.

Ask the parents or look at what is on the invitation for suggestions. My kid has too many legos. Board games are good but we have a lot. Activity books are a bust (but workbooks are good). My kid would love clothing if it were a few brands.

Lego sets. Board games (Battleship, Blokus, Rush Hour, etc.). Spirograph set. Spin art set. Stomp rockets. A box set of chapter books for that age group (e.g. Magic Treehouse). Include a gift receipt in case they already have whatever you gave them.

Legos, science kits, books. My son got a few activity and sticker books (Angry Birds and Skylanders come to mind) that he loved. He got some Crazy Aaron's thinking putty that glows in the dark, too.
