Thanks for all the responses. I honestly didn't think anyone would say it is too small. I know 14x12 is on the smaller side for a master bedroom, but I thought it would be big enough for the few items I mentioned.

It is possible to make the walk in smaller. I think I could do 10'x4' and have clothes on one side. That would make the bedroom 14'x14' - is that big enough?

Currently, there is an old Ikea style cabinet in the exact place I would build something permanent. It has drawers and rods within. I don't like it, but maybe if it were actually built in and finished nicely I would like it better.

Having the built in would still take about 4' of space out of the bedroom - 2' of closet and then space to open the doors. I suppose I could do sliding doors, but they always seem to come off the tracks.

I'm open to more suggestions.

Do built in cabinets (or Ikea). We have a small room like that and I cannot imagine it working at all.

I would rather just build a long reach in closet and preserve the space.

12 x 14 is a tiny master bedroom. No closet is worth that.

Take painter's tape and mark it out on the floor if you can to see that it will feel like navigating in the proposed space.

Also with the walk in closet, really plan out what you want to store. Not everything needs to be eye level on a hanger from two sides. You might need some full length and for pants, jackets, blouses you might be able to do three tiered hanging bars. What about shoe storage?

I wouldn't do it. 14x12 would feel a lot smaller than 14x18. Any way you could make the walk-in smaller?

Hi All.

My master bedroom is 14' x 18' and currently has a small walk in closet. I'm thinking of building a large walk in closet in the bedroom making the bedroom 14' x 12'. The walk in closet would be about 10' x 6'. I've read 6' is the minimum needed for a walk in closet with clothes hanging on both sides.

To give you some perspective, the room is a large rectangle with the door located in the left corner of a 14' long wall. There is a double window on the opposite 14' wall (centered). If I build this closet, it will be along the same wall as the door, so you will enter the room and the walk in closet will be immediately on the right. The master bath/closet door is immediately to the left when you enter the bedroom (it goes to the current walk in closet and bathroom). I would do away with this small walk in and make the space part of a larger/better laid out master bath.

The bed will be positioned on the wall opposite the bathroom. I would have a queen size bead and two night stands on the wall which will be approximately 12'. The bedroom will also contain a chest of drawers (2.5') and dresser (4'). I envision these on the wall opposite the bed.

I can't envision putting any other furniture in the bedroom (if it stays at the larger size or is made smaller).

Does this sound like a good idea? Am I missing anything?
