Storytime, school performances, informational meetings...all things in which I've had to sit through trying to hear the speaker/performance while listening to screaming or talking from kids not taken out by their parents. It's incredibly rude.

Some mothers are totally self-centered and are raising brats. BUT, I have to say that I see this behavior more with foreign nannies than I do with mothers.

NP here and there is a very elegant, older nanny who frequently takes her little guy to story time at our library and to play in the play room. Once I heard her turn to the mother of a screaming child and say very calmly, "You need to take him out now". The other mothers and I practically cheered!

Yup.

I used to worry about why other parents would do or not do things I would not do or do (respectively), but then I found more urgent things to worry about, some of which were actually under my control.

I'm with you Grandma, but go to story time all the time and haven all have removed their screaming children. The librarian even reminds them to do so.

We are not a particularly well-mannered generation, I admit. But as I always tell my mother - that is her fault!

Maybe I am just old and crabby... I take my grandson to story time each week and am amazed when a parent or nanny just sits there and lets her child scream and cry. Do they not hear it? Do they think it doesn't bother other people? I have raised four boys and I know how a tantrum can take you by surprise but...come on! Pick up your kid and take him/her out of the room!

Yesterday, one little boy pushed another little boy during story time - they were both standing in front of the librarian (I never let my boys do that but whatever...) and one boy shoved the other and he feel against the wall. The hurt little boy started crying and the mother removed him immediately. The other little boy (the pusher) was scolded by his mother and he threw a fit. AND THE MOTHER JUST SAT THERE TRYING TO CALM HIM while the rest of us had to endure his ear-piercing screams.

Last week, a little girl behind me started screaming and crying - lying face down on the floor. And the mother tried to "talk her through" her tantrum while the rest of us couldn't hear or pay attention to the poor librarian.

Come on, Ladies! I have often said that my generation raised the the most self-centered generation (you!) in history and times like this I am proven correct.

When your child STARTS screaming and crying -- pick him/her up and carry her out of story time. Not a difficult concept or practice to grasp.
