Who cares about sports? The geeks shall inherit the earth. We aren't going to out-innovate the rest of the world through better football programs.

I am sure that Sidwell and GDS look forward to more schools trying to link their identity to the strength of their sports programs. That field is plenty crowded already -- think WCAC. The Sidwell and GDS niche market of highly motivated, academically talented kids with interests ranging from drama to robotics to jazz music to even sports is plenty deep, especially given the number of wealthy parents in the area who are drawn to that type of an environment.

My son goes to a md private, plays sports and is going nescac. Don't believe all the hype over in NW DC that those schools are the only way your son can get into a top college. Some schools prefer to be more balanced and less of a pressure cooker environment.

It's a good thingy if Potomac is attempting to raise the schools athletic offering.

I went to Yale and I played football.

Contrary to some parents at sidwell, gds and maret, you can have a kid who is very smart, uber competitive on the playing field and wants to play for a winning program.

I hope Potomac becomes more balanced between athletics and academics.

Potomac's Head is a sports guy -- not an intellectual by background or temperament. Without identifying info, in some other sports programs he has had people pushed out because he wants more success for Potomac. He's running the athletic department pretty much directly.

Big loss for Potomac as he was a fantastic coach and even a better mentor for the boys.

Is Landon's Head Coach retiring after this year? Or is this a "Head Coach in Waiting" situation where they are bringing in his presumed successor to work with him for a year or two before the Head Coach retires?

The guy from Mount St. Joe's is not a "big time football coach". He is a very good hire, but that statement is a huge exaggeration.

Potomac has an excellent academic reputation, but the faculty turnover there has always been relatively high for whatever reason.

Not connected at all, just bored watching a movie with DH so perusing DCUM. Over 100 faculty at Potomac and three are leaving? That's a pretty good attrition rate for any employer.

I'm not connected to Potomac at all other than knowing a few people whose kids are there (we're at another private), but this doesn't seem drastic to me...people leave schools all the time for a variety of reasons and the reasons the PP stated above sound very reasonable and normal. I wouldn't stress about (or try to drum up trouble by suggesting any conspiracies!)

Sounds like all different reasons - football coach moving from area (family), lacrosse coach to go to alma mater, and AD because it's time (past time?).

It is a large school and three people is really very small percentage of overall staff and seems pretty normal for any workplace, especially a school.
