I worry about bedbugs and making transactions with potentially creepy listers. I guess I am just paranoid.

That being said, Homegoods is a great place to get some 'for-the-time-being' pieces.

I agree with the earlier posters that suggested craigslist. If you are done with the item and it's still in good shape you can resell it on craigslist too. For accessories, I would suggest Target of all places I know most people think of junk when they think of Target quality, but I've purchased velvet curtains with blackout lining from Target for $40/apiece and no has guessed they are from Target, although I don't mind telling them that. Also picture frames, decorative trays, mirrors, etc, I've seen lots of cute stuff, the trick is buying stuff that doesn't scream "cheap." Also Home Goods for decor stuff as well. Good luck!

If you can take a Tuesday, go to the Weschler's Tuesday auction. Or another local auction or estate sale. You can usually pick up good pieces for cheap there.

I agree with Craigslist - I have gotten awesome items from there. Beautiful, great stuff from rich people who are selling it for a steal.

Check if there is a Facebook group in your area too, i've done well there too.

Craigslist! We have one of the best craigslists in the country. I find amazing pieces on there. Really unique ones I wouldn't be able to find in stores.

I am buying my first house soon. I want to slowly transition from the hand-me-down furniture I currently own to higher quality items. I want to take my time, really understand my personal tastes, needs, etc before I purchase an item. And, for now, I just don't have the resources to spend a lot of money.

That being said, I will need some items immediately. I don't want to spend a lot but I also don't want to look like the an ikea catalog.

Any suggestions on how/where to buy some "for the time-being" pieces?
