Another PP here. Not me. I went to Catholic school in the early 70's. I KNOW what a teacher beating a student looks and feels like. And this is not a teacher, this was his mother. IMO, she gets more leeway than a teacher should. I would call waht the teacher did unnacetable and want them disciplined or fired, but I would still not label it a beating.

The context is a bit more than simply the race of the mother and son. The son was in the midst of a riot in which participants were throwing bricks at police officers. The son had a rock in his hand when his mom saw him. She acknowledged that she "lost it", which I think is understandable in the situation. If "a white boy from Bethesda" was seen by his parent while he was holding a rock in the midst of a riot, I would forgive that parent for losing it.

If anything, the mother's reaction should highlight the brutal tactics normally displayed by the police toward young black offenders. The mom absolutely was correct to fear that her son could be killed. The parent of a white boy from Bethesda would likely not understand that sort of primal fear and might not react in the same manner.

I think she did what she had to do in the moment to protect her son. I do not think of it as violence. I imagine she was terrifird and wsnted to knock sense into her son. Should she have hugged it out, put him in time out, counted one two three...

And sorry. I do not believe in corporal punishment and have never spanked my children (I was spanked as a child). But I damn sure am not going to stand in the middle of a riot and "reason" with my son. He is coming with me by force if need be. When we are talking about life, death and arrest, all of my "child resaoning" bets are off.
