I am sure your husband will be fine.

I think you are more concerned about this than he will be.

If it really bothers you, perhaps when you return, as soon as you can both take some time off, hire a babysitter and go out + paint the town red.

It is nice that you feel bad about this but life sometimes dictates that it can't be as we would want.

If it makes you feel any better my spouse hasn't been gone physically on many of my birthdays but has done little to nothing.

As to what I would suggest, surprise bday before his birthday. Bet that will mean a lot to him.

Have a meal for the family including a birthday cake delivered that day about an hour before they normally sit down for dinner (so that he doesn't try to cook).

That way even though he has to be home with the kids, he doesn't have to cook dinner and they get birthday cake too. Then do something you normally do for his birthday when you get back.

I'm 44, not 16. Birthdays just aren't that big of a deal to me. Don't get me wrong- having them is better than the alternative but I really don't need cake and ice cream anymore.

My DH was out of town for work for my birthday this year. He sent me a present that arrived on my birthday, and also got a massage appointment for me that day. Totally unnecessary, but sweet. I totally understood why he had to be out of town, but I did appreciate it. Maybe getting him a cake that he can have with the kids that day?

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I've travelled for fun trips on my husband's birthday. My husband has also been away on my birthday. We just go out for dinner after the other person returns.
