Simple answer is the airline that flies domestic USA routes and you will use the rewards points. Virgin.

Can you take United? Although United is nothing great, they have a day flight to London which we took last summer. Not sure when the last flight to Edinburgh would be from LHR, but you could investigate.

Other than that, I would take the shortest flight.

I've always had great experiences with Virgin and Luftansa. My BA experience was enh.

Virgin is my preference all the way. Their customer service is excellent and they are great with kids.

We fly to Scotland a lot (family). The connecting flight after an overnight flight is a killer especially with small kids. Instead we've started driving to Philadelphia, parking in long stay and taking a direct flight to Glasgow or Edinburgh (US Airways). Philadelphia is an easier airport experience than Dulles too - has always been much quieter. When flying to London I much prefer BA or Virgin, service and food is better, but I'd take US Airways to Scotland every time to avoid the connecting flight.

The cheapest and/or the airline with the best connections, unless it was Air Canada -- but that's just because I flew internationally on them recently and they were aaawful. Personal preference.

There is no safety difference (statistically speaking) between ANY major Western airline so you have ZERO to worry about safety with any of those airlines. They are all extraordinarily safe and statistically you would have to fly on them every minute of the day for thousands of years to be in an accident.

I have no opinion on comfort but it's just a flight, save the money and go use the cheapest one.

With BA you'll most likely be on American to London. But the hop from London to Edinburgh includes a hot breakfast!

lufthansa is german and is my personally preferred airline from those listed. BA is fine too. check on the exact planes and seat configurations on seatguru to obtain some information on the type of seating you will be getting.

I would do the cheapest one. They are all fine. I would pay 50 or. 60 bucks a ticket to fly a European rather than a domestic carrier, but no more than that. It is going to suck. Air canada might be better as you can change planes in the rvening rather than first thing in the morning ehen you are knackered.
