Exactly there's a pool that's been vetted and are just waiting their opportunity to be interviewed. The majority that are presented are principal material...then there are those who have been sort-after and highly-recommended. DCPS is generating their own principal institute of sorts so the home-grown pool of candidates is inevitable.

There is a pool of DCPS principal candidates who have been vetted. When your school hires a new principal, the superintendent chooses 3-5 people to come before a panel at the school. The panel comprises staff, teachers, parents, and community members. They vet each person based on the attributes they have selected ahead of time and make a recommendation to the chancellor. I was on a panel last year and was impressed by three of the five candidates that came through. Many of the candidates came through the Patterson fellowship, which aims to train future DCPS principals.

DCPS actually has an office and staff dedicated to Principal recruitment. At the Wilson HS meeting months ago, they said they were actively recruiting for the HS positions country wide. I do not know what this process looks like, but that was the message.

We got a new principal this year. She is a former classroom teacher, former instructional coach, former AP. She has been with DCPS for more than 15 years. She came from the Patterson Fellow program that trains principals.

what is the hiring pool? Is there a process for how these things come to pass? Looks like there are needs at elementary and high schools - not sure where else. How will this work?
