DC Tag plus large merit scholarships makes UVM pretty well priced for a state school. I wouldn't send a kid there who couldn't handle the scene but then again the same could be said of many colleges, public or private. Like CU it does attract a lot of mediocre rich kids, especially from the northeast, where the other state schools are blah.

Hmm, sounds like my DC's FCPS high school.

My DC (junior) will likely want to apply to an environmental program here as long as she understands that (1) we can't afford it without merit money and (2) she's not getting merit money with her grades/scores.

Not sure why people would pay OOS tuition for UVM.

Source? I did a quick check and it looks like an approximately 14% minority student body.

Really heavy party scene, both drinking and drugs. Issue is freshman year roommate lottery may put kids that don't want to party into a huge party scene.

The school is big enough that probably can find like-minded students there, and Burlington is a fantastic place to live if you love outs doors activities and don't mind the cold. But my DD had two friends from HS who went there transfer out due to the party scene

This. UVM's undergraduate population is dominated by out-of-state students who often seem to treat it as a 4-year party. The actual in-state population is surprisingly small. Take a careful look at the students if you visit. You may be disappointed.

Relatively small state school in a fabulous town. Location attracts high caliber professors. Expensive, but gives good merit aid. Accepts very early, and loves kids from good DC schools, which probably reinforces its reputation as a safety school -- but if you put aside the stereotypes, it's a very appealing package. Stoner vibe is considerably more muted than at CU Boulder these days. Of all the schools we've visited over the years, it was the one that most exceeded our expectations. Gotta be a cold weather person though, and preferably outdoorsy.

Great school for certain majors, sustainability, Ag-related, pre-med.

Isn't it 80-85% OOS?

It was my safety school back in the 80s. I think it's still in the safety school category based on the kids I know who applied/went.

Especially from an OOS perspective.
