What else would your child take? I mean, isn't that what comes next? How did he/she skip compacted math 4/5?

I love this! There are overlaps and kids are misidentified all the time. Why not try it out. I'd rather have my child challenged and working hard any day over boredom even it means there are occasional freak outs.

I don't know what my kid's MAP was, but she was in HGC before compacted math, and took Math 6 in 5th. Not sure there's any way to skip Math 6 altogether to be in IM, but you might be able to start in Math 6 and then talk to the teacher to see if switching later is an option. FWIW, my kid started in Math 7 in 6th and then switched partway through the year into IM in order to be able to take algebra in 7th.

Under the old curriculum, kids skipped grades and it was fine for awhile but when they got to high school the teachers complained that there were too many holes and the kids weren't able to keep up anymore. That is why there is no more skipping of grades unless a kid clearly needs it. Nothing in your post makes me think your child clearly needs it, but if you think he does have him evaluated. Personally, unless I really really really felt my kid needed algebra in 7th, I wouldn't do it to my own child.

Some of the recoomedantion maybe subjuective as you noted that your child typically coasts. The teacher may not see him as a focused math student who is ready for 7th grade algebra. Are you really certain your child will step up in the harder class. Tough call!

Obviously PP is confused about Map-M scores, but regardless I am going to look at it a different way. Does it matter what the Map-M score is? Do you really want your child missing ALL of 6th grade math just to have algebra in 7th grade???? If your DC is "solid" in math, but not a true prodigy, there is no reason to take Algebra before 8th grade. Your DC will still take calculus before college. Do not set your very solid student up to fail in his/her first year of middle school- there will be enough challenges with so many different teachers and classes.

The compacted math placement is very subjective. My kid was not placed in compacted math at 4th grade. When moving up to 5th grade, some other kids were got into compacted math 5/6, ours was still in 5th math at the beginning of 2014/2015 school year. We requested for reevaluation based on our kid's MSA test result.
After two weeks our kid was placed in compacted 5/6 math. The recent spring MAP-M score was 429. That is considered "very high" for 6th grade based on the chart.
