I would change it. We bought a house built in 1971 with an awful white-painted iron interior railing. It looked cheesy and dated, plus it didn't feel safe (lower in height than I'm used to). We replaced it with a wood railing and were kicking ourselves for not doing it sooner. It looks SO much better. The handrails match our hardwood floors and the banisters match our white trim. It looks clean and modern.

You bought a house together. If this is his priority, cool. What's yours? We each need what we need in order to feel at home. For me, it was the god-awful popcorn ceiling that never seemed to bother anyone else. I prioritized that over a bathroom re-do. To each, his own.

It's inside or outside? I don't see a big deal. Go look at how much wood balusters cost and you'll start loving yours.

I had a wrought iron railing - biggest problem was kid safety (gaps were way too big). Got the iron ballusters + wood railing and love it.

Are the hand rails wood, with wood main posts, with just the balusters that are iron?

All wood railings are okay, but they tend to be cheaper.

Keep it. It adds value to the house.

I think OP is talking about an indoor railing. I personally agree with your husband, OP, I hate wrought iron railings. They just look... I don't know, 70s? In any event, they look kind of conservative and dated. I'm from Europe though, so not sure what people think here. I think either wood that matches the stairs would be nice (might be hard to achieve), or white painted wood. In that case, you might want to paint your risers white as well, that's very classic.

If it is real wrought iron should outlast the house, I wouldnt change it.

In fact, I just installed wrought iron railing/gate around basement stairwell.
It's solid compared to the old cheap aluminum railing it replaced.
