We have regular carpet that's bound thinner than our stairs. Love it! We got it mostly for our dog so he wouldn't fall down stairs

Carpet treads are another option if you still want to see more of the wood on the stairs.

You definitely need to pay someone to install or it won't look right. Any major carpet store will be able to install for you.

I also prefer the look of wood stairs, but I slipped and fell twice and I have little kids. We have the runner and don't regret it.

They're not a big deal to clean. At all. It takes 2 minutes with the right vacuum.

We bought a stair runner from a carpet store and had it installed by the store. We did it after our large dog slipped down the stairs one evening, and the next morning (having gone back upstairs post-fall) refused to go back down the stairs. It took us 4 hours to coax him down. Stair runner was ordered that afternoon.

I loved the look of the bare stairs (we'd had carpet previously then installed wood treads and risers and stained them ourselves), but I also remember a slip down the stairs myself. Oh well.

I want to put down a stair runner on our wood stairs, mostly for safety as I've slipped on those stairs.
Has anyone done this or have suggestions? We have a landing between the two floors.
Did you install it yourself or hire someone? Where do you buy the runner?
