Well, you can focus on the parents, or you can focus on the police and CPS -- you know, the law. I think the actions of the police and CPS are the issue here.

Imagine now it wasn't the police who came along and took the kids.
Clearly the 10 yr old and 6 yr old aren't equipped to deal with situations like the parents believed.

But actually it was the police.

+1 Everyone was doing what they thought was right.

I have no interest into getting into another long thread about this again. OP just wants to find fault. Boring.

I'm not the OP, and I want to find fault. You know all those worries about kids being abducted by strangers? For these kids, that worry became reality yesterday, thanks to a busybody neighbor.

Clearly the biggest threat to these kids are the police and CPS.

A 10 yr isn't supervision.

When I was 6, I walked a mile to school by myself or with my brother, who was 8. This was the absolutely, totally, completely, 100% normal thing to do. Everybody's jaws would have dropped in disbelief if you had said that a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old need adult supervision to walk to the park on a sunny weekend afternoon in spring.

I really don't understand why? At 10, I would walk to the park and bicycle to the mall with my younger sister. This was in the early 1980s and crime was higher during that time.

The Silver Spring family with "free-range" children were involved again with the police and Child Protective Services. Seems someone reported to the police that the kids were playing alone in a park. I can only imagine the panic that the parents felt when the kids were not home at their agreed time. The parents spent about 2 hours looking for them.

I thought the kids were supposed to carry cards saying they were "free-range" kids. Did I miss that in the article?
