They removed the state gas tax in NoVA and raised the sales tax.

The roads through SW VA are fantastic! At least when I lived down there they were. I didn't realize Va even had potholes until moving here. We had friends and relatives visit us from other states and they would rave about the roads. I always thought they were so weird to be impressed by roads..until moving out of state and then here.

They, of course, just took the highway down 81 and never had to drive through NoVa.

Is that the reason? Did the extra taxes get put into place to pay for roads?

This really bothers me, too. I do not know the basis for it. And seems like the type of thing that wouldn't be legal under our commonwealth's constitution.

We recently moved into the area. I was doing our taxes when I saw that the state sales tax is 4.3 percent with a 1 percent locality tax. However in NoVa the state sales tax is 5 percent with a 1 percent locality tax. I would understand if the locality tax was different but what is the rationale for the state taxing residents in one region of the state at a different rate? Is it due to infrastructure investments in NoVa?
