We got the iPhone for a penny around Christmas. I'd definitely shop around and see what deals are available. There should be some combo of phone and plan that works better for you than others. If you have multiple phones now with one carrier, you may be able to leverage moving your plans to a new carrier to get a deal on the kid's phone.

I paid $40 ( on sale frm $80) for a Tracfone Android. Service is cheap and reliable. No contract.

We went with Republic Wireless and got him a $150 phone (there's also a $100 one). We pay $12/mo for unlimited texts/calls and free data over wifi.

I have T-Mobile and since they don't offer contracts you have to pay for phones in full or trade in the old phone and then pay the remaining balance on the new one. Their Equipment Installation Plan isn't bad since it breaks up the phone costs into monthly payments over 2 years, but the phones are expensive. Samsung & Apple are by far the most expensive phones. LG makes some really nice phones that are far less expensive and still have the Android operating system.

PP above here. I was thinking the same thing...I don't think it's possible to just pay $200 up front for a contract. Most carriers are getting away from that. I think you will have to pay monthly. About $20/month for an iPhone 6.

A different PP here. I'd say about $200 for an iPhone. Are you trying to get a 2 year contract, or no contract?

I don't think the transition will be difficult. Kids are up to date on all technology these days. They understand it.

sorry, I should have added - currently he has an Android. None of us in our home have anything Apple - except Ipods. Not really sure I want to get him an Iphone Do you think transferring over from Android to Apple would be a hassle? I hadnt thought about it, but I'm willing to consider an Iphone.

To the pp whose kids both have Iphones that were more than 4100 - how much exactly? I'm trying to get an idea of what's reasonable to spend on a cell phone for a teenager.

Mine both have iphones so they were more than $100. DS paid for 1/2 of his to upgrade before we were ready to pay for it, DD has generally been fine with DHs hand me down iphones. Their monthly service on the family plan we have is $25-$40/month with data (mine is more expensive, the additional phones are reasonable).

Go ahead and get the boy an iPhone. Whatever phone you choose, you can pay on it monthly with the Equipment Installation Plan with T-Mobile. My iPhone 6 is only like $20 extra a month on my bill. No money is due up front - you just pay monthly.
