Buy a crate that's big enough for the full grown dog to go in and turn around. It's not a play space but a safe space.

Think of a new puppy as a baby. They will put anything and everything into their mouths. Puppy proof. Get down on your knees and put your head at their eye level to figure out what they could get into.
Buy some appropriate puppy toys. If your dog is teething, put the dog toy in their mouth if they try to nibble you.
Don't let a puppy play or chew on anything that you wouldn't want a full grown do to.
