Black-out shades from Next Day Blinds. They're wonderful, and we've had free service anytime they need a string replacement, etc. (twice in 10+ years). Not cheap but worth every penny.

We have a cheap black vinyl black out shade, and yeah, OP, i think it makes the room hotter. If you stand right in front of it, it emanates heat.

+1 We got cellular shades through Budget Blinds and they have really helped with both keeping out heat/cold and road noise. I wasn't expecting much, so I was surprised. And we got the light filtering kind for our main floor. I'm now considering getting blackout for our bedrooms.

They insulate the room during the winter, too (slightly drafty during winter). We got some from JC Penney that were very affordable and look nice.

Ugh - Solar

Solor shades are supposed to help keep warm in winter and cool in summer.

We moved into a new house in November. My 11 month old son's room gets a ton of sunlight during the day. It wasn't a problem during the winter, but now that its getting warmer his room is REALLY warm. Right now we have cheap vinyl roller shades covering the windows that we keep down during the day. Could these be making the problem worse?

Can anybody suggest window coverings that can help block out the sun and the heat so the room isn't so warm? Would blackout curtains help? I've read online that honeycomb shades help block out heat and sun, are they worth it? TIA!
