Former waitress--It's fine. Just don't linger at the table for ages afterwards.

Ok but why do you think the waitress asked the question?

Who cares? Were you scared she spit in your sundae?

Because that particular waitress was probably miffed that you weren't spending more. Other waitresses wouldn't have cared.

She asked because she has a thousand things going on in her personal life that she's trying to keep straight, trying to get ready for Passover or Easter, plus has a lot going on at the restaurant and is trying to keep all THAT straight, and she was just trying to make sure an order hadn't slipped through the cracks. Stop overthinking this.

I have two points to make.

1) You ordered food (ice cream or French fries, it hardly matters). The servers job is to serve the food, regardless of quantity. I'm a former waitress--tip as usual, especially in the middle of the afternoon. You turned the table fast, I bet.

2) Ice cream: the plural of ice cream IS ice creams. http://www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/ice%20cream

I said no we're not, just want the ice creams and drink. She said sure she just wanted to make sure. Then it hit me that she might be hinting I should order food as this is a restaurant not an ice cream shop, and it's Saturday and people are waiting for tables.

Did I make a mistake? I did something similar at a Johnny Rockets but it was fries and soda only, and the waitress never said anything...

To which I would have replied "yes. I am ordering food. The ice cream."

I wouldn't give it another thought at all. I highly doubt you were there during the lunch rush.

They may order less, but they'll turn over faster. Op, you're fine.

I'm going to disagree with the PP. At Red Robin I'd say that is totally fine. But yes, nice to drop a little extra into the tip if are able.

Former waitress here. You should leave a larger tip when you do this. You take up space at a table a server is relying on to make money. Servers only get a certain number of tables in their section. Of course you don't have to, but it's the nice thing to do since you are seated in her section and she is still going through the motions as she would if it were a table with a much higher dinner tab.
