I think it's hard to establish who the legitimate ruler is of a land that has been ruled by conquest. The Baratheon rebellion was a conquest. The Targaryen dynasty started as a conquest as well of a group of smaller kingdoms.

The logic would be that the legitimate ruler is the victor who manages to hold the throne, regardless of bloodline. Personally, I've always been a fan of the Jon + Dany theory, but it's actually pretty tough to make the case that any one candidate is more legitimate than any other.

The Jon Snow theories all arise from events that are discussed in the first book with Ned, so nothing there is a spoiler. Dany's visions from the House of the Undying are in Clash of Kings... which is book 2. So you should be OK.

It's not a spoiler, it's just a theory I thought about and when I googled it a few months ago there has been some online discussion re it. But the identity of Jon snows parents has never been disclosed in the books or in the show as of yet.

I agree that it's Jon Snow. Given everything that we know about Ned, it is highly unlikely that he actually had a bastard son, refused to tell him about his mother, and never made him a legitimate heir. It was all an effort to protect his identity and his claim, and I think that eventually he and Dany (his aunt) will rule together.

Yes, i believe he is the son of Ned Stark's sister and a Taergarean (he captured the sister or they ran off together, depends on who you ask, I believe this is why Ned Stark took Jon Snow home with him and acted as if it were his bastard). Google the theory, he's the "prince that was promised"

Setting aside personal preferences, just technically:

Is it Stannis? (unlikeable though he may be)

So, when Robert Baratheon took the throne, it seems that Daenerys (and her family members) lost her claim entirely. (If you believe that Robert Baratheon rightfully defeated the Targaryens and that House Baratheon is the new royal family...)
Robert had no legitimate children, and seems that illegitmate children have no claim (although not sure why they are tracking down the illegitimate children)...

So, when Robert died, seems the next in line should be his brothers Stannis, followed by Renly (now dead anyways)...

After Stannis, the next in line would be his daughter, correct?


NOTE there are claims like Robb's to be the King of the North, or Balon's claim is to be King of the Iron Islands which are both separate and different from being King of the Seven Kingdoms and sitting on the Iron Throne ...
